McIntosh, who had been Wisconsin’s athletic director since 2021, hired Fickell and continued to back him as the Badgers went 9-15 over the last two seasons.

Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell opened up Tuesday about the personal and professional impact of athletic director Chris McIntosh's departure, framing it as the loss of a key ally but emphasizing that the path forward remains unchanged: the Badgers must win.

"It's not easy to lose a friend," Fickell stated after a morning practice, acknowledging the disappointment that comes with a change in leadership. McIntosh, who hired Fickell away from Cincinnati in 2022, had been a steadfast supporter through two challenging seasons that saw the Badgers go 9-15, ending a storied 22-year run of winning records.

Fickell was direct about the program's immediate priority. "I think the easiest thing for us right now is to understand you’ve got to win," he said. "We’re not beating around the bush." The coach confirmed McIntosh had informed him of the potential move to become the Big Ten's deputy commissioner for strategy last week, a transition that underscores the ever-shifting landscape of college sports administration.

With deputy athletic director Marcus Sedberry stepping in as interim AD, Fickell expressed confidence in the continuity of the department, noting Sedberry's diverse experience across college football and the NFL. The coaching staff's focus, however, is locked on reversing the team's fortunes on the field.

The pressure is undoubtedly on for Fickell, whose impressive 53-10 record at Cincinnati has yet to translate to consistent success in Madison. As the Badgers look to rebuild their identity in the new-look Big Ten, this offseason marks a critical turning point—one where performance will ultimately define the future, regardless of who occupies the athletic director's office.
