In a tough season finale at Founders Park, the University of South Carolina baseball team fell to Winthrop 5-2 on Tuesday night, closing out their home schedule with a hard-fought loss. The Gamecocks, who have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season, couldn't quite overcome a strong Eagles squad that struck early and often.
Winthrop set the tone in the third inning, plating two runs with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to take an early lead. South Carolina answered quickly in the bottom of the frame, with KJ Scobey lifting a sacrifice fly to bring Will Craddock home and cut the deficit to 2-1. But the Eagles responded in the fourth, as Ethan Wilson crushed a two-run homer to double their advantage.
Luke Yuhasz provided a spark for the Gamecocks in the fifth, launching his fifth home run of the season—a solo shot that brought the score to 4-2. However, Winthrop added an insurance run in the eighth on a wild pitch, sealing the 5-2 final.
Craddock led the Gamecocks at the plate with two hits, while Scobey and Yuhasz drove in the team's runs. Starter Connor Chicoli took the loss, allowing seven hits and four runs over 3.2 innings. Alex Philpott delivered a bright spot out of the bullpen, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Despite the loss, South Carolina celebrated a remarkable season of fan support, drawing 234,129 spectators across 36 home games. Scobey now leads the team with 34 RBIs, a testament to his consistent production in the lineup.
The Gamecocks now hit the road for their final regular-season series against Vanderbilt, starting Thursday, May 14, at 7 p.m. ET in Nashville. It's a pivotal matchup as the team looks to finish strong and build momentum for the postseason.
