The New York Jets made a notable addition to their receiving corps this week, signing veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick. To accommodate the move on their 90-man roster, the team released undrafted kicker Will Ferrin.

However, for Patrick—now 32 years old and well past his prime—a spot on the final 53-man roster is far from guaranteed. His 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars was modest at best: just 15 receptions for 187 yards and three touchdowns. That's a far cry from his peak production in Denver, where he twice topped 700 yards in a season.

Familiarity likely played a key role in Patrick's signing. He has existing ties to Jets general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn, both of whom crossed paths with him during their time with the Denver Broncos and Detroit Lions, respectively. That connection could give him a slight edge, but it won't be enough on its own.

Patrick faces a steep uphill battle to make the roster. Garrett Wilson is firmly entrenched as the Jets' No. 1 wideout. The team also invested heavily in the position, using the 30th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Omar Cooper Jr., who is expected to step in as the complementary No. 2 option.

Beyond those top two, the Jets have intriguing depth. Midseason pickup Adonai Mitchell finished the 2024 campaign strong and returns with a defined role. Fourth-round rookie Arian Smith, entering his sophomore season, needs to show growth but has the draft capital working in his favor.

That leaves Patrick competing for what amounts to the WR5 or WR6 spot—and to land there, he'll need to prove he can contribute on special teams, a critical factor for any player on the roster bubble. He brings depth, familiarity with the coaching staff, and veteran experience, but the message is clear: nothing will be handed to him.

For Jets fans, Patrick's addition is a low-risk, high-reward bet. But if he wants to be on the field come Week 1, he'll need to earn every snap.
