Will The Houston Rockets Select Any Players in the Draft This Year?

Rafael Stone has never kept a second-round pick, but looming salary cap constraints may force the Rockets to finally embrace depth over draft-night trades this offseason.

When you think of the Houston Rockets' rebuild, names like Jalen Green, Alperen Şengün, and Amen Thompson come to mind. But there's a curious trend that has quietly defined General Manager Rafael Stone's tenure: he has never once kept a second-round draft pick. Not a single one.

For a team that was laser-focused on tanking for top lottery talent, that strategy made sense. Why clutter the roster with late-round fliers when you're stockpiling future stars? The results speak for themselves—Green, Şengün, Thompson, Tari Eason, and Jabari Smith Jr. are all cornerstones of the rebuild.

But here's the thing: second-round picks are more valuable than ever. Look no further than the Rockets' own history. Montrezl Harrell and Isaiah Hartenstein both cut their teeth in Houston before blossoming into impact players elsewhere. De'Anthony Melton and Dillon Brooks were also Rockets' selections—traded away before they could contribute—only to become key role players for the Memphis Grizzlies.

In the last two seasons, Houston has traded their lone second-rounders, watching players like Jahmai Mashack (drafted 59th) earn meaningful minutes in Memphis, and Pelle Larson carve out a solid role with Miami. These aren't household names, but they represent something the Rockets desperately need: cheap, productive contracts.

With the salary cap tightening and Houston's young core approaching extension territory, depth and financial flexibility are paramount. The Rockets currently hold the 39th and 53rd picks in the 2026 draft. After a season of standing pat at the trade deadline, it's time for a complete 180. Using those picks—for the first time in Stone's career—could be the smartest move the franchise makes all offseason.
