Could Paris be the unlikely host of Winter Olympic events in 2030? That's the question on everyone's lips as French Alps Games organizers scramble to find a new home for ice hockey—just months after the City of Light dazzled the world during the 2024 Summer Games.
Remember those breathtaking images of athletes sailing down the Seine during the Opening Ceremony, beach volleyball beneath the Eiffel Tower, and marathoners racing past the Palace of Versailles? Paris proved it can host anything. Now, it might step up for the Winter Games too.
The 2030 Winter Olympics and Paralympics were originally set to split events between the snow-covered French Alps and the sunny French Riviera city of Nice. Snow sports would stay in the mountains, while ice sports—including men's ice hockey—would head south to Nice's Allianz Riviera stadium. But that plan has hit a major snag.
Nice's newly elected far-right mayor, Eric Ciotti, has thrown a wrench in the works. He opposes converting the city's main soccer stadium into a temporary hockey arena, citing the high cost and disruption to Nice's top-tier soccer team, which plays during the same season. According to French newspaper Le Monde, Ciotti has also called for relocating other Olympic venues in Nice. Local news site Nice Premium reports that the coastal city will still host figure skating, curling, and women's ice hockey—but men's hockey is up in the air.
Last week, France's sports minister, Marina Ferrari, told The Associated Press that organizers are already exploring backup plans. "Our responsibility now is to begin preparing alternative scenarios in case we encounter difficulties," Ferrari said. "At this point we are exploring all options, I could not be clearer."
Two other Nice stadiums were apparently ruled out by 2030 Games organizers earlier last week, with NBC Sports reporting that each had "limitations" as a temporary hockey venue—particularly due to "exceptionally high cost and overall impact."
Enter Paris. The Paris Entertainment Company, which operates the Adidas Arena and Accor Arena in the French capital, has submitted a bid to host ice hockey in 2030. Both arenas were used as competition venues during the 2024 Summer Games and are already Olympic-ready. And Paris isn't the only contender—Lyon has also been mentioned as a possible alternative.
For sports fans and apparel enthusiasts alike, this is a fascinating twist. Whether you're dreaming of hockey in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower or sticking with the original Alpine plan, one thing's for sure: the 2030 Winter Games are shaping up to be as dramatic as the competition itself. Stay tuned as organizers lace up their skates and figure out the next move.
