The Championship play-off final is shaping up to be a thrilling showdown at Wembley on Saturday, 23 May, and the big question on everyone's mind is: will momentum be the deciding factor? As four teams—Millwall, Southampton, Middlesbrough, and Hull City—battle it out for a spot in the Premier League, recent form could be the key that unlocks the door to glory.
Southampton enter the play-offs riding an impressive wave of confidence. Unbeaten in the league since 17 January, they've amassed a league-best 14 points from their last six games. That kind of streak isn't just about luck—it's a statement of intent from a side that knows how to finish strong. Millwall, meanwhile, ended the regular season just one point shy of an automatic promotion spot, collecting 11 points in their final six matches. Their resilience and defensive solidity have made them a tough opponent for anyone. Middlesbrough have managed nine points in that same stretch, while Hull City have stumbled to just six, leaving them as the underdogs heading into the semis.
"I feel that momentum, wherever you finish—whether it's third, fourth, fifth, or sixth—coming into it with a real feel-good factor is really important," says former player Jobi McAnuff on the More Than the Score podcast. "You look at Millwall or Saints this year, and they are definitely the two coming into it with that—and of course they are third and fourth. I think if you are fans of those clubs, there are two factors there that are in your favour."
The play-off semi-finals kick off on Friday, with Hull City hosting Millwall at 20:00 BST. The Tigers secured their spot on the final day with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Norwich City, but McAnuff believes the Lions have the edge. "I do favour Millwall to get through—their away form has been absolutely brilliant this season," he explains. "They are going to be a real hard nut to crack, very solid defensively, very organised. For the semis, I think that suits them well. It's a club that has been around the play-offs more often than not in the last few years and not quite able to get there."
As the drama unfolds, one thing is clear: momentum isn't just a buzzword—it could be the difference between a trip to Wembley and an early exit. For fans, players, and even those of us who love the game, this is where the season truly comes alive. Whether you're backing the Saints' surge, the Lions' grit, or hoping for a surprise from Boro or Hull, the play-offs promise edge-of-your-seat action that defines English football at its best.
