Bayern Munich's pursuit of Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon might have hit an unexpected roadblock—and it all comes down to a single, ill-advised comment.
The drama began when Bayern supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge publicly mocked Newcastle's transfer of Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart last summer, calling the club an "idiot" for paying around €75 million. That remark didn't sit well with the Magpies, and according to journalist Mano Bonke of Tz, it could now come back to haunt the Bundesliga giants.
Newcastle is reportedly holding firm on their asking price for Gordon, seeking upwards of €90 million for the 25-year-old England international, who is under contract until 2030. Bayern, meanwhile, has allegedly set a ceiling of €70 million for the deal. That €20 million gap is already significant—and Rummenigge's words have only added tension to the negotiations.
Interestingly, when Rummenigge made his infamous comment, Gordon was one of the Newcastle players who publicly defended his teammate. "To be honest, it's a bit silly, especially when the player has had a really good start," Gordon said at the time. "I don't know why anyone would comment on a player who isn't playing for his club."
Now, as Bayern looks to bring in a dynamic winger to bolster their attack, that lingering bad blood could prove costly. Will Newcastle let bygones be bygones, or will Rummenigge's words leave Bayern back at the drawing board?
