Every great comeback story starts with a little convincing from friends. For Will Carleton Academy senior Madison Recob, that nudge was all she needed to rediscover her passion for track and field—and the results have been nothing short of spectacular.
After stepping away from the sport following her freshman season, Recob poured her energy into volleyball and basketball, earning all-league honors in both. But when her friends urged her to return to the throwing circle for one final season, she couldn't resist. "I guess I just didn't really like the sport that much, but my friends convinced me this year to do it with them, and I wanted to hang out with them more," Recob said.
That decision has already paid off in a big way. Recob captured the SCAA championship in girls shot put this season, re-establishing herself as one of the county's premier throwers. Her season-best heave of 33 feet, 3 inches matched the personal record she set as a freshman in 2023—the same year she qualified for the MHSAA Division 4 state finals. The conference title capped an impressive run of four straight wins, and remarkably, Recob has yet to finish below second place in any shot put event this season.
But the road back wasn't easy. After three years away from competitive throwing, Recob faced a steep learning curve. "Probably getting the technique down again," she said of her biggest challenge. "The beginning of the season, I definitely didn't start where I left off my freshman year, so I had to rebuild to get where I am."
That rebuild has been a testament to her dedication. Week by week, her improvement showed in the results, culminating in a championship performance that proved she still has what it takes. Now, as the postseason approaches, Recob has her sights set on one final goal: a return trip to the state meet.
"That was my furthest career, and I got it this year," Recob said, reflecting on matching her freshman personal best. With her technique dialed in and confidence soaring, this senior is poised to write one more memorable chapter in her athletic career—proving that sometimes, the best comebacks are the ones you never saw coming.
