Wilkes-Barre advances to next round of AHL Playoffs

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are moving on in the AHL Playoffs after a decisive 4-1 victory over the Hershey Bears in Game 4 last night. The win eliminated the Washington Capitals' top affiliate and sent a clear message: this Penguins team is built for a deep postseason run.

Goaltender Sergei Murashov stole the show, stopping 36 of 37 shots in what was easily his best performance of the playoffs. With their season on the line, the Bears pushed hard to claw back into the game, but Murashov stood tall, turning away every desperate attempt Hershey threw at him.

The game's defining moment came in the second period when defenseman Harrison Brunicke scored the eventual game-winner while the Penguins were shorthanded. After a shot from Gabe Klassen, Brunicke activated from the blue line, charged into the offensive zone, and buried the rebound—all while killing a penalty. It was the kind of high-risk, high-reward play that energizes a team and deflates an opponent.

Early in the third period, Wilkes-Barre extended its lead to 2-0, and the goal itself was a thing of beauty. Mikhail Ilyin, the 21-year-old Russian forward, displayed the kind of creativity that made him a standout in the KHL. With a cheeky little touch pass, he set up Ville Koivunen for a doorstep finish. It's the type of play that's starting to surface more and more at the AHL level, and it's turning heads. Ilyin now has three playoff points in four games. While his production doesn't yet match the legendary 14 points in 10 games that a young Jake Guentzel put up in 2016, plays like this make you wonder just how much of that scoring talent might translate to North American hockey.

That Ilyin, Tristan Broz, and Koivunen line is becoming a nightmare matchup for opponents—a third line that plays with the skill and confidence of a top unit. If they keep this up, the Penguins' depth could be the difference-maker in the rounds ahead.
