Sometimes in baseball, the best response to an early punch is a knockout rally. That's exactly what the Columbia Falls Wildcats delivered on Tuesday evening, shaking off a first-inning deficit to dominate the Bigfork Vikings 15-4 in a Northwest A conference showdown.
The Vikings came out swinging, using a leadoff walk, a stolen base, and timely hitting to jump to a quick 2-0 lead. But the Wildcats' mentality, as pitcher Jett Pitts noted, was unshaken. "We're like a family," Pitts said. "Baseball is a sport that is 90 percent mental and we knew that today." That mental toughness was on full display as they immediately answered in the bottom of the first, with Tristan Victor and Jaxson Cadwell delivering key hits to snatch a 3-2 lead.
The second inning was where Columbia Falls truly erupted, showcasing the explosive offense that can change a game in minutes. They sent 11 batters to the plate in a seven-run barrage. The lineup came alive with clutch hits, including a two-run double from Pitts and another two-run double from Wyatt Dodson, blowing the game open to a 10-2 advantage. "I love baseball season, I am having a great time — we went out there and had fun," said Jory Hill, who helped spark the inning.
Bigfork managed to scratch across two more runs in the third, but the Wildcats' offense was relentless. They added two more in their half of the third and sealed the mercy-rule victory with three runs in the fourth, powered again by Victor and Cadwell, who each finished with three RBIs.
Jett Pitts was the catalyst, earning the win on the mound with eight strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings while also contributing two hits and two RBIs at the plate. It was a complete team performance that has the Wildcats looking ahead with confidence. "Last year we had more seniors and leadership," Hill added, "but we have guys stepping up big in their roles — we’re excited."
Both teams hit the road for their next contests, with Columbia Falls (4-2) traveling to Libby and Bigfork (4-1) heading to Browning on Thursday.
