The Minnesota Wild are looking for a fresh start after a chaotic 9-6 loss to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 1 of their playoff series, leaving head coach John Hynes with some tough decisions ahead of Game 2.
Hynes is still weighing his lineup options, including who will be in net. The Wild fell behind 3-0 early, rallied to take the lead, but ultimately let the game slip away in a scoring frenzy that saw the Avalanche set a franchise playoff record for goals.
"I think last night was a bit of an anomaly," Hynes said. "I'm not worried about Wally. He's got a great track record. He's played really well. He has playoff experience and he has positive playoff experience. Everyone has to reboot. We all have to be better and we're planning on doing that."
Goaltender Jesper Wallstedt had a rough night, allowing eight goals, but he was quick to move on. "That's done. There's nothing we can do about that," Wallstedt said. "Now it's just about analyzing, looking through that one and then let it go. Focus on the next one."
Forward Mats Zuccarello echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the need for a better team defensive effort. "Clean up some stuff and be better for Wally. We gave them too many easy chances and hopefully it's a one-off for us because we haven't really played like that as of late. It doesn't matter if it's 8-0 or 1-0 or whatever. It's Game 1, they're up and we have to be better as a team defensively."
A potential change in net could see Filip Gustavsson, who went 28-15-6 with a 2.69 goals-against average this season. He hasn't played since allowing five goals at St. Louis on April 13.
The Wild are also dealing with injuries to forward Joel Eriksson Ek and defenseman Jonas Brodin, both out with lower-body issues and expected to be reevaluated soon. For now, the team is focused on resetting and tightening up their game as they prepare for Game 2.
