The Minnesota Wild find themselves in a defensive crisis after a disastrous start to their second-round playoff series against the Colorado Avalanche. Through two games, the Wild have surrendered a staggering 14 goals—including two empty-netters—leaving their coaching staff scrambling for solutions ahead of a crucial Game 3.

The losses of veteran defenseman Jonas Brodin to injury have been compounded by the on-ice struggles of stalwarts Jared Spurgeon and Jake Middleton during the two games in Denver. Spurgeon has been on the ice for eight of those 14 goals, while Middleton has been caught out for nine. For a team that prides itself on structure, these numbers are alarming.

During a rare three-day break before Saturday's Game 3 in St. Paul, head coach John Hynes is exploring every option. While the Wild skated at TRIA Rink on Thursday, there was no update on Brodin or center Joel Eriksson Ek, both of whom have been sidelined since late in Round 1 against Dallas. "But that wouldn't determine whether they play or not," Hynes said, keeping the door open for a potential return.

Despite the defensive meltdown, captain Jared Spurgeon remains optimistic. "We all care in here, but we can't let that get to you," he said after the 5-2 loss in Game 2. "The way we play the game, we're getting our looks and sustaining zone time. We just need to keep frustration out of the room."

Complicating matters is the absence of veteran Zach Bogosian, who continues to battle a lower-body injury that cost him half the regular season. In his place, rookie Daemon Hunt has stepped up admirably. Hynes praised Hunt's skating and ability to handle line rushes, noting, "He's an excellent skating defenseman. He's hard to close plays, strong at the net front, and can join the rush because of his mobility." Hunt, who recorded six assists in 32 regular-season games, is ready for any assignment. "I'm kind of up for whatever," he said on Thursday.

With the top pairing of Brock Faber and Quinn Hughes locked in, Hynes may shuffle the bottom four defensemen to find a winning combination. For a team that entered the playoffs with high hopes, the next two days will be critical in determining whether they can regroup—or if their season will end in defensive disarray.
