The second round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs is proving one thing: expect the unexpected. The Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche have delivered a masterclass in adaptability through the first four games of their series, with each contest looking nothing like the one before it.
From a high-scoring shootout to a defensive goalie duel, from Colorado striking early and never looking back to Minnesota dominating from the opening faceoff, this series has had it all. The Avalanche have jumped out to a 3-1 lead heading into Game 5, but the path has been anything but predictable.
"I guess you could say that's kind of what playoffs are," said Wild defenseman Jake Middleton. "Especially this one. Two juggernaut teams kind of feeling each other out throughout these first few games, and we know what we've got to do to move forward."
Despite the lopsided series score, the games have been tightly contested. Remove empty-net goals from the equation, and Colorado's three wins have come by just two goals twice and one goal once. Minnesota's lone victory was a decisive 5-1 blowout in Game 3, with one of those goals also being an empty-netter.
Wild coach John Hynes emphasized the need for constant adjustment. "As series go on, there's an understanding of some of the things that they did really well that they didn't do as well, or maybe a little differently last game," he said. "It's the same thing for us, and things we have to get to that we didn't get to the right way. Every game presents a different challenge."
Wild forward Nico Sturm, who won a Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2022 and reached the Final with Florida last season, knows a thing or two about playoff adaptability. "It probably just shows what both teams are capable of," Sturm said. "Both teams are able and capable of playing different styles depending on how the night goes. I'd say that's probably the biggest takeaway from this series."
For fans and players alike, the message is clear: in playoff hockey, versatility is king. And this series is proving that the best teams can win ugly, pretty, and everything in between.
