Sometimes the best path to your destination isn't a straight line. For defensive tackle John Walker, his journey to Ohio State football is a story of second chances and the powerful pull of a relationship built on trust.
Four years ago, the Buckeyes missed out on the highly-touted prospect from Kissimmee, Florida. Back then, staying close to home was the priority for Walker, who admitted, "I wasn't ready to leave my family." The move to Columbus felt too daunting, leading him to sign with UCF, just an hour's drive away.
But the connection forged during that initial recruitment never fully faded. When Walker entered the transfer portal this past January, he heard a familiar voice: Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson. The same coach who had recruited him out of high school was the first to reach out, a testament to a bond that endured.
"He’s still family to me," Walker said, "even though I didn’t go to him at first." That sentiment was echoed by Coach Johnson, who noted, "When you build a relation with great players and you get a chance to go back to them, that relationship means something." This time, that relationship made all the difference, leading Walker to finally become a Buckeye.
Walker arrives in Columbus with a blend of proven talent and untapped potential. A former top-100 high school prospect, his career at UCF had its ups and downs, including a knee injury that sidelined him in 2024. He bounced back strongly last season, however, earning a starting role and using his formidable 6-foot-3, 302-pound frame to rack up 40 tackles.
"You knew he had the talent when he’s healthy," Johnson observed, adding that Walker has been "on point ever since he’s been here." His arrival is timely, as Ohio State looks to reload its defensive interior after the departures of Kayden McDonald and Tywone Malone Jr.
Walker won't just be handed a spot; he'll have to earn it in a fiercely competitive room. The Buckeyes retained key contributor Eddrick Houston and made a major addition in Alabama transfer James Smith. Alongside returning rotational piece Will Smith Jr., this group promises to be a formidable force in the trenches, and Walker's powerful presence will be a central part of that equation.
