McCarthy remains in Minnesota even after the Murray move.

The Minnesota Vikings made waves this offseason by signing veteran quarterback Kyler Murray, a move that signaled a potential shift in their long-term plans for young QB J.J. McCarthy. But despite the new addition, McCarthy remains on the roster—and it doesn't look like that's changing anytime soon.

While the pairing might seem awkward on the surface, the Vikings appear content to keep both quarterbacks in the fold for the 2026 season. And according to insiders, a trade is highly unlikely.

Why? It all comes down to investment. The Vikings have already paid 70% of McCarthy's rookie contract, and trading him now would mean getting pennies on the dollar for the draft capital they used to select him. As ESPN's Dan Graziano noted, "There's no way they could get anything in return that remotely approaches what they spent."

McCarthy showed flashes of promise last season, but his inconsistency was a concern. Rather than cutting bait, the Vikings are betting that bringing in a proven veteran like Murray could serve as both a mentor and a motivator. "Part of their hope is that bringing in Murray sends some sort of shock to McCarthy's system and gets him refocused," one source close to the situation explained.

And let's not forget—Murray isn't exactly a sure thing. He's had just one fully healthy season in the last five, and the Cardinals are still paying him nearly $36 million this year to play elsewhere. So while the Vikings may be looking for an upgrade under center, they're not ready to give up on McCarthy just yet.

For now, it's a waiting game. And for Vikings fans, it's a quarterback room that just got a whole lot more interesting.
