Ewing, the 21-year-old top prospect who's being called up to the big leagues with just 12 games of Triple-A experience under his belt. Under normal circumstances, general manager David Stearns might hesitate to rush a player this young. But these aren't normal circumstances, and the Mets are betting that Ewing's talent can provide the spark they desperately need.
So, what do scouts see in this kid? Plenty, it turns out. "If you're looking for a spark, like they are, he's got the game to bring energy," one scout shared. "He's got great speed. He'll steal a base, he'll make a diving play. He gets really good jumps in the outfield — he's a natural in center field." That kind of defensive prowess and base-running threat is exactly what a slumping team needs to shift momentum.
But can he hit major league pitching right away? That's the million-dollar question. Scouts are cautiously optimistic. "His swing is short and quick to the ball, and he has a knack for fouling off pitches to keep at-bats alive until he gets a pitch he can handle," the scout added. "He adapted quickly to Triple-A pitching, so I wouldn't bet against him."
Ewing's rise has been nothing short of impressive. Drafted in the fourth round out of an Ohio high school in the 2023 MLB Draft, the left-handed hitter has consistently exceeded expectations. Last season, he climbed two levels and finished strong in Double-A, hitting .339 over 28 games. This year, he started in Double-A and tore it up with a .349 average and a 1.051 OPS in 18 games, forcing a promotion to Triple-A. Even after a slight cooling-off period, he was still hitting .326 with a .392 on-base percentage at the time of his call-up, along with five stolen bases — and he hasn't been caught stealing once.
For a team in need of a spark, Ewing brings a blend of speed, defense, and a knack for making contact that could translate into instant impact. Whether he's ready for the bright lights of the majors remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure: the Mets are giving their fans a reason to believe again.
