Trading for Trout makes zero sense for Boston and would likely be a massive mistake.

Trading for Mike Trout might sound like a blockbuster move, but for the Boston Red Sox, it would be a costly mistake. Here's why the rumored deal should stay just that—a rumor.

The chatter started on 98.5 The Sports Hub, where host Mike Felger shared an intriguing but questionable tip from an unnamed source: "Don't be surprised if we end up with Mike Trout. He's 100 years old, but they believe he is a better leader than Alex Bregman and will hit a ton of home runs at Fenway Park."

While the idea of adding a future Hall of Famer is tempting, the reality is far less glamorous. Trout is 34 years old and has been sidelined by injuries for much of the last six seasons, averaging just 75 games per year. That wear and tear has shown in his numbers too—after posting a career 1.002 OPS through 2022, his production has dipped to .844 since then.

Then there's the financial side. Trout still has roughly $178 million left on his contract, which runs through his age-38 season in 2030. That's a massive commitment for a player whose best years are likely behind him.

Fit is another issue. The Red Sox already have a crowded outfield and designated hitter situation. What they really need is infield help, not another player competing for at-bats in the same spots.

Trout is having a nice resurgence this season, and no one forgets he was once the best all-around player in baseball. But those days are in the rearview mirror. He's still a dangerous hitter, but he's also aging, expensive, and injury-prone.

A decade ago, trading for Mike Trout would have been a no-brainer, franchise-altering move. Today? It's a risk Boston simply can't afford to take.
