The Los Angeles Rams came into the 2026 NFL Draft with the No. 13 overall pick as their chance to improve the team and go all-in for the 2026 season.
However, as Underdog NFL shared on X, the Rams pulled off a stunner, drafting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with their first-round pick. There had been plenty of buzz between the two sides, but this selection is a massive stunner.
So, with the chance to draft USC wide receiver Makai Lemon at No. 13 overall, why did the Rams draft Simpson over Lemon when they had the chance to help their 2026 Super Bowl odds?

The Rams drafted Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick, in part due to Matthew Stafford. With his future uncertain, the Rams are getting out ahead of a potential retirement and taking Simpson at No. 13 overall.
Compared to the pre-draft buzz that had Simpson as a late-round 1 pick at best, this is a true draft stunner. It's especially stunning since Lemon, one of the top WRs in this year's class, was still on the board.
But the Rams made this pick with the future in mind. For a team going all-in, this pick isn't about the 2026 NFL season; it's about the future.

While wide receiver would've been a nice pick, with Davante Adams and Puka Nacua in the final years of their deals. But, instead of taking Lemon, the Rams are drafting Simpson to add some insurance at QB.
With a strong wide receiver draft class, the Rams can wait until Round 2 or 3 to select some wide receiver depth.
It's a massive surprise for the Rams, but it's a pick that makes sense for a team in need of a long-term quarterback plan instead of relying on Stafford to come back at the end of each season.
