As the Pittsburgh Pirates hit the road for their west coast swing, they'll be flying without two key figures in the dugout. Manager Don Kelly and pitcher Chris Devenski have both been handed suspensions by Major League Baseball following a heated incident in Saturday's game against the Cincinnati Reds.
Devenski, who was ejected from that game after firing a pitch directly at Reds batter Sal Stewart, will serve a two-game suspension after reaching a settlement with the league. The original ruling called for three games, but negotiations brought it down to two. Kelly, meanwhile, will sit out one game—starting Tuesday night as the Pirates open their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The drama unfolded in the bottom of the fourth inning when Stewart called a timeout just as Devenski was winding up. Instead of pulling back, Devenski let the pitch fly—straight at Stewart. The umpires wasted no time, ejecting the pitcher for what they deemed an intentional throw.
Crew chief Alan Porter explained the call: "We had the situation leading up to it with Devenski stepping off the rubber and Stewart stepping out of the box. Still had time and stepped out. After that, Devenski stepped up, fired the pitch and we believe threw it at him intentionally. That's why we ejected him."
Devenski, however, insisted it was all part of his game plan. "Going hard inside to start an at-bat," he said after the game. "I know the guy likes to dive over the plate. Just trying to execute my pitch there, and I think he took it the wrong way."
Kelly also received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for his role in the incident. With the manager sidelined, bench coach Kristopher Negrón will step in to run the team as the Pirates look to stay sharp against Arizona.
