Why Padres' Fernando Tatis Jr. problem needs to be resolved ASAP

This problem cannot continue for the Padres for much longer.

The San Diego Padres are riding high atop the NL West standings in mid-May, but beneath that promising record lies a brewing storm that could derail their season. Currently sitting above the star-studded Los Angeles Dodgers, the Padres owe much of their success to Maason Miller and a pitching staff that has kept them competitive. However, the offense has been sputtering, and one glaring issue is becoming impossible to ignore: Fernando Tatis Jr.'s prolonged slump.

It's one thing for a superstar to hit a rough patch early in the season. It's another thing entirely when that rough patch stretches deep into May without signs of recovery. As Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller recently pointed out, the Padres need Tatis to snap out of this funk immediately—before their good fortune runs out.

"Inexplicably, the Padres are alone in first place in the NL West without his help," Miller wrote, noting that San Diego's year-to-date run differential of just +1—boosted heavily by a 6-1 record against the Rockies—suggests they'll need far more from their star outfielder moving forward.

The numbers paint a concerning picture. While the Padres boast a solid 25-17 record, they've scored only 177 runs while allowing 174, giving them a razor-thin +3 run differential. Compare that to the Dodgers' +63 mark, and it's clear that San Diego's current position is fragile at best. If the Padres can't start slugging with more consistency, Los Angeles will almost certainly overtake them.

The solution? It starts with Tatis finding his swing. Even during his previous low point in 2023, when he posted a .770 OPS, Tatis still managed 25 home runs and a .257 batting average. This season, however, his .252 average is respectable, but the power has completely disappeared. His .298 slugging percentage and .626 OPS are alarming red flags, and perhaps the most stunning stat of all: Tatis has yet to hit a single home run. It's May 14th.

The Padres have managed to stay afloat without their superstar's production, but that luck won't hold forever. If San Diego wants to remain atop the NL West and make a serious playoff push, they need Tatis to rediscover his power—and they need it now. The clock is ticking.
