The Green Bay Packers have made a savvy move to shore up their quarterback room, signing veteran signal-caller Tyrod Taylor to a free-agent deal, as reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero on Monday. This addition brings a former Pro Bowler (2015) to Lambeau Field, adding a layer of experienced insurance behind starter Jordan Love.
Taylor, now 36, has carved out a journeyman's career with stops in Baltimore, Buffalo, Cleveland, Los Angeles (Chargers), Houston, New York (Giants), and most recently, the Jets. In 2025, he went 1-3 as a starter for New York, demonstrating he can still manage a game when called upon. But in Green Bay, his role is clear: back up Love, not compete for the starting job.
This signing fills a critical gap left by Malik Willis's departure. Willis served as the QB2 for the past two seasons but signed with the Miami Dolphins in free agency, leaving a noticeable hole on the depth chart. Taylor steps directly into that spot, providing a reliable veteran presence who won't flinch if Love—who has dealt with injuries in the past—needs to miss time.
Behind Taylor, the Packers have a trio of young arms battling for the third quarterback spot: Desmond Ridder, Kyle McCord, and Kyron Drones. Ridder brings NFL starting experience but has become a journeyman. McCord, entering his second pro season, set records at Syracuse in 2024. Drones is an undrafted rookie out of Virginia Tech. For now, the important piece is that Love has a seasoned backup ready to step in, giving the Packers peace of mind as they build toward the season.
