The Toronto Maple Leafs are reshaping their front office, and that means parting ways with a familiar face: former NHL star Shane Doan.
Doan, a veteran of 1,540 career games with the Winnipeg Jets and Arizona Coyotes, quietly served as a member of Toronto's hockey operations. But as The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun reported Monday, the two sides have decided to go their separate ways—a mutual decision, according to sources.
It's a move that reflects the Leafs' new-look leadership. Doan was originally hired by former general manager Brad Treliving, and with a fresh front office in place, both parties agreed it was time for a change of direction.
Doan's hockey resume is impressive: 402 goals and 570 assists over a storied NHL career, Olympic representation for Canada, and a proud dad to Buffalo Sabres forward Josh Doan. At 49, he's still got plenty of options. He even interviewed for the Vancouver Canucks' GM vacancy, though that search appears to have narrowed to other finalists.
Now a free agent in the hockey world, Doan has the experience and reputation to land anywhere—whether in a front office, coaching role, or elsewhere. For the Maple Leafs, this is just one more piece of a puzzle that's being rebuilt from the top down.
