Why Maple Leafs are parting ways with Craig Berube as head coach

Toronto is going in a new direction.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are turning the page once again. After weeks of speculation, the organization has officially parted ways with head coach Craig Berube, announcing they have "relieved Berube of head coach duties." It's a move that signals a fresh start for a franchise that has become synonymous with high expectations and unmet potential.

Berube's tenure in Toronto lasted just two seasons, but the contrast between them couldn't be starker. After a promising first campaign, the Leafs stumbled badly in Year Two, posting a disappointing 32-36-14 record. That marked a staggering 30-point drop from the previous season and snapped the team's nine-year playoff streak. Simply put, the on-ice product didn't match the organization's ambitions, and the vibes around the team soured quickly.

Berube is no stranger to the NHL coaching carousel. With 10 years of head coaching experience under his belt—including stints with the Philadelphia Flyers and a Stanley Cup-winning run with the St. Louis Blues—he brought a proven track record to Toronto. But even a championship pedigree couldn't weather the storm of a lost season under new management.

“Craig is a tremendous coach and an even better person,” new general manager John Chayka said in a statement. “This decision is more reflective of an organizational shift and an opportunity for a fresh start than it is an evaluation of Craig. We are grateful for his leadership, professionalism and commitment to the Maple Leafs organization and wish Craig and his family nothing but the best moving forward.”

Financially, the move comes at a cost. According to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, Berube still had two years and $4.5 million remaining on his contract. The Leafs will owe him that amount unless he lands another head coaching job elsewhere.

As the offseason heats up, Toronto now has another major storyline to track: the search for a new bench boss. With a roster still featuring superstar talent and a fanbase hungry for results, the next hire will need to be the right fit for a team desperate to rediscover its winning identity.
