In a dramatic turn of events at the Miami Grand Prix, Liam Lawson has been cleared of any wrongdoing after his dramatic collision with Pierre Gasly sent the Alpine driver flipping into the barriers—and it was all down to a mechanical failure that left Lawson helpless.

The incident unfolded on lap five at the Turn 17 hairpin, when Gasly attempted to overtake Lawson's Racing Bulls machine. But as the two approached the corner, Lawson suffered a sudden gearbox failure under braking, sending his car into neutral and leaving him unable to slow down. The resulting contact launched Gasly's Alpine into a terrifying flip, with the car landing partially on the barriers. Miraculously, both drivers emerged unscathed but were forced to retire from the race.

Following a post-race investigation, the FIA stewards confirmed that telemetry data and in-car radio communications clearly showed a gearbox failure occurred just before the crash. "We accept the driver's explanation that this was a failure of a mechanical part in the car and that there was nothing that he could do to avoid the collision," the stewards' report stated. They also noted that Lawson could not have anticipated the failure, ruling it a "mechanical failure" rather than driver error.

For Lawson, the incident was a first in his F1 career. "It sucks for both of us obviously," he said. "I just went into the last corner and when I braked lost the gearbox and I went to neutral so I basically had no gears and I couldn't stop. It's not something I've had before."

The Miami GP continues to deliver high-octane drama, and while this crash could have ended much worse, the ruling offers a fair resolution. For fans and drivers alike, it's a stark reminder that in the world of Formula 1, sometimes even the best-laid plans can be undone by the machinery beneath you.
