This weekend, La Liga pitches will transform into a vibrant runway of football history. In a landmark celebration, 38 of the 42 clubs across Spain's top two divisions will ditch their modern strips and play in special retro shirts. This coordinated "Retro Round" is a first for any of Europe's five major football leagues, designed to honor each club's unique cultural identity and iconic looks from the past.

The initiative goes far beyond just the kits. To fully immerse fans in the nostalgia, match referees will also wear throwback attire, television broadcasts will feature retro graphics, and a vintage-style match ball will be used. The campaign was officially unveiled in grand fashion at Madrid Fashion Week in March, highlighting the powerful and growing intersection of football and style.

While the vast majority of teams are participating, four clubs will not be wearing special jerseys. Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano, and Getafe are still involved in the campaign but cited logistical reasons for not changing kits. Real Madrid, however, is not participating in the initiative at all.

La Liga director Jaime Blanco explained the thinking behind this unique event, stating it's a powerful way to connect the league's rich past with its dynamic present. "It allows us to bring the past into the present while continuing to build experiences and strengthen the legacy that emotionally connects with supporters," he said. By launching the collection at a premier fashion event, La Liga aims to position football at the center of cultural and creative conversations far beyond the pitch.
