Why Jonathan Gannon didn’t carry set scheme with him to Green Bay

New Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon expects to build the playbook over time, pulling from many different places.

When Jonathan Gannon sat down with Matt LaFleur to interview for the Green Bay Packers' defensive coordinator role, he brought a philosophy that has defined his coaching career: flexibility over rigidity. Gannon, who previously coordinated the Philadelphia Eagles' defense, has never been one to carry a fixed scheme in his back pocket. Instead, he believes in building a playbook that molds itself around the players—not the other way around.

Back in 2021, during his interview with Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, Gannon made the same pitch. "He probably laughed," Gannon recalled, "and said, 'You better get one.'" Five years later, Gannon still hasn't settled into a single defensive identity—and that's exactly the point.

"The game adapts," Gannon explained. "I don't really get caught up in the 4-3 or 3-4. We're an NFL-style defense, hopefully. Every year, you've got to solve problems with your guys in mind." Now, with a new roster in Green Bay, he's taking the same approach: learn the personnel first, then build the system around their strengths.

Gannon told LaFleur he wouldn't arrive with a pre-packaged playbook, and he's sticking to that plan. He's already made it clear to his new players that this will be a collaborative process. "I told them the other day, if we're not good at this, just because I like it, we're not going to do it," Gannon said. The defensive playbook, he noted, will be built over time—drawing from a wide range of influences, including schemes from Philadelphia, Minnesota, Arizona, San Francisco, Buffalo, and even college powerhouses like Alabama and Georgia.

For Packers fans, this signals a defense that will evolve rather than stay static. Gannon's philosophy is a reminder that in the NFL, adaptability often wins out over stubbornness. As he put it, "If you say, 'This is my playbook, here's what we're going to run,' you're really not adapting to the players you have." In Green Bay, the playbook will be written by the talent on the field—not the other way around.
