Rajasthan Royals' fortress in Jaipur is at the centre of an unexpected controversy, as during their clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad, a string of dropped catches drew attention to a new problem, which is the stadium's brand-new floodlights.

The iconic Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, long revered as Rajasthan Royals' fortress, has found itself at the center of an unexpected controversy in IPL 2026. During a high-stakes clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad, a series of uncharacteristic dropped catches raised eyebrows—and now, the culprit may be the stadium's dazzling new LED floodlights.

Installed just before the start of the season, these state-of-the-art lights were meant to be a straightforward upgrade: brighter, more efficient, and better for visibility. But instead of helping players, the intense glare has turned routine catches into challenges. Fielders are struggling to track the ball against the harsh backdrop, leading to costly mistakes in the field.

Until last year, the SMS Stadium had one of the weakest lighting setups among all IPL venues. The new system has pushed the maximum lux level up to 3,500—a dramatic leap that has caught players off guard. While brighter lights sound like a win for night games, the transition has been anything but smooth.

Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara addressed the issue with refreshing honesty. "They have done a great job with redoing the floodlights. They're LED lights, and they're quite different to what we are used to in other grounds. They are much brighter and give a larger amount of visibility," Sangakkara explained. "We have been trying to see what the right adjustment is so that the fielders are comfortable and they don't lose the ball in the glare."

The good news? Ground authorities have already taken feedback and made adjustments to the lighting settings. For Royals fans, it's a reminder that even the best upgrades come with a learning curve—and that in cricket, every detail matters, from the pitch to the floodlights above.
