Bobby Wagner is already a household name in the NFL—a 10-time Pro Bowler, six-time All-Pro, and Super Bowl champion. But now, the future Hall of Famer is adding a new title to his resume: Doctor.
Returning to his roots at Utah State University, Wagner received an honorary doctorate and spoke at the school's commencement ceremony. With a playful grin, he made one thing crystal clear to his family: "If you didn’t know, my name is now Dr. Bobby Wagner. And to any family members here, you need to update my name in your phone. It’s ‘Dr.’ now. I will no longer respond to ‘Bobby.’ It’s Dr. only."
The honor came alongside another sweet gesture from Utah State—retiring Wagner’s No. 9 jersey. He’s now one of only three players in school history to receive that distinction, and it’s well-earned. Wagner remains Utah State’s all-time leading tackler with 446 stops, a record that speaks to his relentless drive even before he hit the big stage.
That drive carried him through a remarkable NFL career, defined by longevity at the punishing inside linebacker position. Now entering his 15th season, Wagner has missed just 10 regular-season games—a mind-boggling feat for a player who lives in the trenches. Last year, suiting up for the Washington Commanders, he led the team with 162 tackles and started every game. Whether he returns to Washington remains uncertain, but his experience would make him an invaluable mentor for rookie linebacker Sonny Styles.
From gridiron legend to honorary doctor, Bobby Wagner continues to redefine what it means to be a champion—on and off the field.
