George Pickens’ situation gets an update from Jerry Jones’ son and Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones

The George Pickens situation in Dallas has taken a compelling new turn. The star wide receiver has officially signed his franchise tag with the Cowboys, locking him in for the 2026 season at a hefty $27 million. But while the ink is dry, the air around his future remains thick with questions.

Speaking on Mad Dog Radio, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones—son of owner Jerry Jones—gave a revealing update. He confirmed the team hasn't yet received word that Pickens will attend every mandatory portion of the offseason program. Voluntary workouts are one thing, but the team is watching closely for a full commitment.

“Certainly, that’s what we expect,” Jones said. “Anytime a player signs a contract, the expectations are clear. When you sign up, you’re under contract, and you’re expected to do what your teammates are doing.” He added that Pickens has been working with quarterback Dak Prescott, which is a positive sign, but stopped short of guaranteeing full participation. “We will see how this thing plays out,” Jones said. “There’s zero interest in a trade for George Pickens. Zero interest.”

That last line is a clear statement of intent. Dallas sees Pickens as a core piece of a receiver room that already features All-Pro CeeDee Lamb. The duo has the potential to be one of the most dangerous in the league. “The challenges it causes other defenses when you have two dynamic receivers like CeeDee and George,” Jones noted. “I think George has a chance to, believe it or not, get better. Playing alongside CeeDee keeps everybody honest.”

Still, the pressure is on. The franchise tag is a one-year deal, and the last Cowboys player to earn a multi-year extension after playing on a first franchise tag was Dez Bryant back in 2015. Pickens needs to prove he's worth a long-term investment. Former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho has already warned that the situation could get complicated, but for now, Dallas is betting on its star duo to deliver.

Whether Pickens shows up for every workout—and how he performs when it counts—will be the story to watch this offseason.
