Caleb Lomu wasn’t dreaming of draft day or waiting for a life-changing phone call. Just six years ago, his biggest football goal was simple: play defensive end for Highland High School alongside his friend and neighbor, Fisher Camac.
Back then, his coaches saw the raw potential and uncommon athleticism. They knew they had something special in the making. But Lomu didn’t see it himself. The sophomore from Gilbert, Arizona, admits he didn’t take the sport seriously at first.
“He didn’t want to play offensive line,” recalls Highland offensive line coach Bill Critchfield. “I said, ‘Look, if you play offensive line for me, then I will let you play defensive end with Fisher.’ So I kind of bribed him. He was unsure. He thought offensive line was stupid, and he wanted to get his name in the paper.”
Lomu started at left tackle during that 2021 season, which ended with a heartbreaking loss in the championship game. But the following summer, everything changed.
That’s when the taller-than-average sophomore attended camps around Arizona. Suddenly, he was competing against upperclassmen with Division I scholarship offers. And he wasn’t just holding his own—he was dominating. His raw athleticism was on full display, and for the first time, Lomu realized he was more than good enough.
When his junior year rolled around, Lomu arrived at Highland with a new level of intensity and determination.
“He’s like, ‘I know that guy’s going to whatever Big 12 school, and I can block him as a sophomore. Maybe I can actually do this,’” says Highland head coach Brock Farrell. “Once he decided that and believed it, he took everything seriously and really kicked it into gear. He brought others along with him. A true leader, teaching young kids how to do things correctly. It all kicked into gear.”
The coaches at Highland watched this teenager transform into a budding NFL prospect. Once unsure of his abilities, Lomu grew into a special person off the field and an extraordinary player on it. Now, every coach who has worked with him believes the Patriots drafted someone truly remarkable—a player whose unrelenting drive to improve and uncommon athleticism have exceeded every challenge placed in front of him.
