The Chicago Cubs find themselves in an intriguing position as the MLB trade deadline approaches, with speculation mounting that they could be the ideal landing spot for Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper.
The rumor mill began churning after Phillies president Dave Dombrowski revealed he's already had early trade conversations with other clubs. Philadelphia's disastrous 9-19 start cost manager Rob Thomson his job, and if the losing continues into the summer, the Phillies could shift from buyers to sellers at the deadline.
What makes this scenario particularly compelling is the apparent tension between Dombrowski and Harper. The two-time MVP reportedly took issue with Dombrowski's offseason comments suggesting Harper was no longer an elite player. While Harper holds a no-trade clause, he might waive it for the right situation.
Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer has identified the Cubs as a team to watch in any potential Harper sweepstakes. "The Cubs are in a perfect spot to not leave good enough alone," Rymer wrote. "The point of adding Harper would be to make a key strength even more ironclad."
The logic makes sense: While Michael Busch had a solid 2025 campaign at first base, he's neither an emerging star nor a player with significant financial commitment from the organization. As Rymer notes, "His leash should be short."
Harper would bring elite power and championship experience to a Cubs clubhouse that already features his World Baseball Classic teammates Alex Bregman and Pete Crow-Armstrong. More importantly, he could provide the offensive firepower needed to compete with National League powerhouses like the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves in October.
There's also the Wrigley Field factor. Harper has expressed admiration for the Cubs and their historic ballpark in the past. While Chicago's farm system isn't overflowing with top prospects, pitching prospect Jaxon Wiggins could be the centerpiece of a potential deal.
For Cubs fans dreaming of adding one of baseball's most dynamic stars to their lineup, the pieces may be falling into place. All it would take is for Philadelphia's struggles to continue and for Harper to decide that Chicago is where he wants to write the next chapter of his Hall of Fame career.
