When Caitlin Clark was named the near-unanimous WNBA Rookie of the Year in October 2024, it was a moment that should have sparked major celebrations. But according to a new book, the Indiana Fever star quietly turned down the league's plans to make a big deal out of it.
In On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women's Sports, author Christine Brennan reveals that Clark and her team declined the WNBA's offer for a press conference and multiple interviews to promote her historic honor. League spokesperson Ron Howard explained that they "offered to come to Indy after the team season had finished and do a press conference" and even tried to arrange a sit-down with NBA Entertainment. But both Clark's team and her agent said no.
"Adding to that the fact that we had a chance to do a sit down with her for GMA as well, but the opportunities were declined," Howard told Brennan, painting a picture of a star who preferred to let her game do the talking.
Fast forward one year, and the contrast couldn't be more striking. When Paige Bueckers won the 2025 Rookie of the Year award, the Dallas Wings guard chose a very different path to celebrate. She danced through the Spirit Tunnel on The Jennifer Hudson Show, where WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert surprised her with the trophy.
"I bet I'm the last person you thought you'd see on this cool spirit tunnel," Engelbert joked before handing Bueckers the hardware. "I'm here to present you with the 2025 KIA WNBA Rookie of the Year award, congratulations."
Two stars, two celebrations, and one clear message: in the WNBA's new era, everyone gets to write their own story.
