The Atlanta Braves have made another roster move, trading catcher Jonah Heim to the Athletics for cash considerations. This comes just over a month after Heim joined the Braves following his release from the Texas Rangers.
Heim brought an impressive resume to Atlanta—he's an All-Star and a World Series champion, having earned his ring with the Rangers in 2023. But with the Braves' catcher depth suddenly looking strong, Heim became expendable.
The Braves recently designated Heim for assignment, and now he's headed back to familiar territory: the A's organization. Heim actually played for Oakland back in 2020, though the team has since relocated from the Bay Area to Sacramento.
In 39 at-bats this season with Atlanta, Heim hit .231 with one home run and eight RBIs. Not bad, but not enough to hold onto a roster spot once the Braves got healthier behind the plate.
The key factor? Sean Murphy is back in action after missing the start of the season. He joins top prospect Drake Baldwin on a quality depth chart, leaving no room for Heim. In Oakland, Heim will back up Shea Langeliers, so playing time may still be limited—but he could push for the backup role.
It's a big midseason move across the country for Heim, but he's a pro who has navigated roster changes before. For the Braves, it's a simple numbers game: when you're healthy at a premium position, you make the tough calls.
