Why Baltimore Orioles' Trevor Rogers Could Become An All-Time Great Trade Acquisition

The Orioles' ace has been on a tear since last season.

On paper, the Baltimore Orioles' acquisition of left-hander Trevor Rogers at the 2024 trade deadline didn't scream "future ace." But in baseball, the best moves are often the ones that defy the initial stats. Since the start of the 2025 season, Rogers hasn't just been good for the O's—he's been one of the most dominant pitchers in the entire league.

The context makes his rise even more remarkable. When Baltimore acquired him from the Miami Marlins on July 30, 2024, Rogers carried a 2-9 record and a 4.53 ERA. The Orioles parted with young talent, sending infielder Connor Norby and outfielder Kyle Stowers to Miami. His initial stint in Baltimore was rocky, finishing 2024 with an 0-2 record and a 7.11 ERA over four starts. It looked, for a moment, like a trade that simply hadn't worked.

Then came the turnaround. After missing the start of the 2025 season with a dislocated kneecap, Rogers returned on May 23 and was virtually untouchable. He finished the year with a 9-3 record, a microscopic 1.81 ERA, and a 0.90 WHIP over 18 starts. That 1.81 ERA set a new franchise record for any Orioles pitcher with at least 100 innings in a season, earning him the Louis M. Hatter Most Valuable Oriole Award on a team that finished last in the AL East.

Now, Rogers is pitching like a man on a mission in his walk year. Through his first three starts of the new campaign, he's 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA and has walked just one batter over his last two outings. This level of sustained excellence has shifted the conversation from whether he's a good pickup to whether he could become one of the greatest trade acquisitions in baseball history.

While Norby and Stowers remain promising young pieces for the Marlins, it's nearly impossible to overstate the value of a true, top-of-the-rotation arm. Rogers has transformed into exactly that for Baltimore. If the Orioles can secure him with a long-term extension and he maintains this elite performance, this trade will be remembered not just as a win, but as a franchise-altering heist. Every time he takes the mound, he's building his case for that legacy.
