The Oakland Athletics are sitting pretty at the top of the AL West with an 18-16 record, and their offense deserves a big chunk of the credit. While Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz are turning heads, it's a different area of the roster that's really stealing the show this season: the outfield.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the A's outfield depth is the deepest it's been in years—and that could be huge news as the MLB trade deadline approaches on August 1. "Once Lawrence Butler starts hitting and Denzel Clarke recovers from a bone bruise in his right foot, the A's outfield might be an area from which they can trade," Rosenthal notes.

Here's the bottom line: the A's have an embarrassment of riches in the outfield, and that surplus gives them serious flexibility at the deadline. Lawrence Butler and Denzel Clarke are solid starting options, but the real story is the wave of talent behind them. Carlos Cortes is absolutely on fire right now, posting a 1.092 OPS in 75 at-bats. Tyler Soderstrom is quietly producing with a .730 OPS over 32 games, and Colby Thomas has been a reliable depth piece with a .267 average and .820 OPS in limited action.

Zack Gelof is also getting time in the outfield, adding a .711 OPS to the mix. That's six outfielders—Butler, Cortes, Clarke, Soderstrom, Gelof, and Thomas—who could all be trade chips if the A's decide to shop around.

So what does this mean for the A's? If they can flip one of these outfielders for young, MLB-ready pitching, it would be a massive win for the franchise's long-term future. Sure, they're in first place now, but the season is long, and having this kind of depth gives general manager David Forst a powerful hand to play at the deadline. Whether they're buyers or sellers, the A's outfield is the story to watch.
