This weekend, La Liga is turning back the clock. While throwback jerseys are a beloved staple for individual clubs, it's a rare spectacle to see an entire league coordinate a full-scale retro event. That's exactly what's happening across Spain, as 16 of the 20 top-flight clubs and every team in the second division will don special heritage kits in a unified celebration of football history.

The "La Liga Retro" initiative, running from April 10th to 13th, is a country-wide nod to the roots of each club. It's more than just kits; the weekend will feature a vintage-style match ball, specially designed referee uniforms, and retro graphics for television broadcasts, creating a fully immersive throwback experience for fans.

The exclusive kits were first unveiled in dramatic fashion at Madrid Fashion Week in March. The goal is to connect a new generation of supporters with the rich heritage of Spanish football, blending iconic past designs with the modern game. Notably, four clubs will not be wearing the retro kits: Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano, and Getafe are sitting out for logistical reasons, while Real Madrid is the only club not participating in the initiative at all. However, even Madrid's match against Girona will feature the vintage ball and broadcast theme.
