OAK RIDGE — For two hours, Malik Howard's feet barely touched the ground. The Oak Ridge tight end glided across the practice field, snagging every pass thrown his way with effortless precision. Even at half-speed during a spring workout, the 6-foot-4, 230-pound standout looked every bit the four-star recruit he's been billed as.
"I feel like I've leveled up as a player," Howard told Knox News on May 12. "I'm growing and maturing more."
That growth hasn't gone unnoticed. As the No. 9 overall recruit in Tennessee's 2027 class and the highest-ranked prospect in the Knoxville area per the 247Sports Composite, Howard has become a hot commodity. His list of suitors reads like a who's who of college football powerhouses, with offers pouring in from nearly every major program.
Oak Ridge head coach Derek Rang has taken notice of his star tight end's evolution. The Wildcats are reshaping their offense to maximize Howard's unique skill set—a blend of size, speed, and versatility that's rare at the high school level. "We've studied what Power 4 tight ends are asked to do," Rang explained. "Blocking, route-running, catching, scheme. He's been super productive, and we're going to expect him to do a lot—stretching the field vertically, controlling the middle on intermediate throws, and even making plays in the quick game."
The message is clear: when you have a weapon like Howard, you find creative ways to deploy him. "You can't just use him one way," Rang added. "You need a catalog of plays to get him the ball and keep him successful."
Howard's recruitment tour is in full swing. He's already visited Notre Dame in late March, with an Oregon trip set for May 16, and future visits to Alabama and Tennessee on the horizon. His decision is expected to come in "late June, early July." So what's he looking for in a program? "I want to see if I fit in that culture," Howard said. "I want to be around guys who want to win and take pride in working hard. At the end of the day, I want to go where I'll be developed the best."
For a player who's already leveled up, the ceiling keeps rising. Wherever he lands, one thing's certain: Malik Howard has the tools to make an immediate impact—and the right gear to match his game.
