Could the Houston Rockets really pull off a blockbuster trade for Donovan Mitchell? The short answer: it's nearly impossible.

Rumors are swirling that the Rockets have their eyes on the Cleveland Cavaliers' superstar guard. But when you dig into the numbers, this deal faces a massive roadblock—and it all comes down to salary cap math.

In the NBA, trades require salaries to roughly match. Mitchell is set to earn $46.3 million next season. The problem? Houston simply doesn't have a contract that comes close to that figure.

Fred VanVleet could be a starting point for matching salaries, but he's not the kind of centerpiece that would excite Cleveland. Even then, the Rockets would need to sweeten the pot with young assets like Jabari Smith Jr. and Reed Sheppard just to get the Cavs to listen.

Here's where it gets even trickier: VanVleet is coming off an injury and holds a player option for the 2026-27 season. If he declines that option, the entire salary-matching framework collapses.

Without VanVleet in the mix, Houston's options become extremely limited. The only other contracts that could make the numbers work are Kevin Durant (who actually makes more than Mitchell) or rising star Alperen Sengun. But would Cleveland want another center in a deal for a guard? Probably not. And adding Durant would make the Cavs older—likely the opposite direction they'd want to go.

Could a third team step in to help facilitate? It's possible, but as things stand, the math just doesn't add up. For Rockets fans dreaming of a Mitchell-Houston backcourt, this might be one trade that stays in the rumor mill.
