Why 49ers haven't traded Brandon Aiyuk — and if they still plan to release him

San Francisco still has Aiyuk on its roster.

The San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk have been locked in a tense standoff for months, but one thing remains clear: Aiyuk is still a 49er. Despite rampant speculation and a 2025 season where he didn't play a single snap, the wide receiver remains on the roster as the team weighs its options.

Once a promising trade candidate, that window now appears firmly shut. Why? Simple economics. As ESPN's Dan Graziano recently explained, "Everyone in the league knows they're going to have to eventually release him." The math is brutal: if Aiyuk is on the 2026 roster, the 49ers owe him $27 million. Any team trading for him would inherit that same hefty price tag. But if San Francisco cuts him, they owe nothing—and a new team could sign him for far less.

For the 49ers, patience is a virtue. Since none of Aiyuk's money is guaranteed, there's no financial pressure to act quickly. "The Niners don't need to cut him until it's time for him to get paid," Graziano notes, "so they can wait and see whether a team ultimately decides to send them a draft pick."

While the Washington Commanders have been floated as a potential landing spot, nothing can move forward until San Francisco makes the first move. Given the rocky history between Aiyuk and the organization over the past two years, don't expect them to rush into doing him any favors. For now, the ball—and the $27 million question—remains in the 49ers' court.
