The Tar Heels are facing a significant roster shakeup as star center Henri Veesaar has all but closed the door on a return to Chapel Hill. The Second Team All-ACC selection made it crystal clear in a recent conversation with ESPN's Jeff Borzello: he's staying in the NBA draft.
"I'm all-in on staying in the draft," Veesaar said. "It's 100% my decision to stay. I think it's the right decision, basketball-wise." When pressed on the possibility of rejoining first-year head coach Mike Malone's squad, the big man didn't mince words, essentially ruling out any comeback.
It's a tough blow for a UNC team in transition, but not entirely unexpected. Veesaar, who transferred from Arizona last offseason, was a force in the paint all year. The Estonian native started all 31 games he appeared in, averaging 17 points and 8.7 rebounds while racking up 13 double-doubles. His standout performance at the NBA combine—where he measured in at an impressive 6-foot-11—only solidified his stock as a likely late-first or early-second-round pick.
So, where does that leave the Tar Heels? Coach Malone and his staff aren't sitting idle. UNC currently boasts the No. 7-ranked transfer portal class, headlined by a potential Veesaar replacement: 7-foot Northwestern transfer Cade Bennerman, who redshirted his freshman year. The Tar Heels have also secured a commitment from four-star international center Sayon Keita, adding depth and versatility to the frontcourt.
While losing a player of Veesaar's caliber stings, the new-look Tar Heels are clearly building for the future. With a mix of promising transfers and a clear vision from Malone, UNC fans have plenty to watch as the roster takes shape for the upcoming season.
