There's a real possibility Mizzou will be without one of the best rushers.

When a team loses a Doak Walker Award finalist, the natural question is: Who steps up? For the Missouri Tigers, that answer might be Jamal Roberts—and the St. Louis native is more than ready to carry the load.

Ahmad Hardy, Missouri's first-team All-SEC running back and the program's single-season rushing record holder (1,649 yards, 16 touchdowns), was shot at a Mississippi concert early Sunday morning. The school confirmed Monday that Hardy is in stable condition following surgery, but his availability for the upcoming season remains uncertain.

If Hardy is sidelined, all eyes turn to Jamal Roberts. The junior back shared carries last season and still managed an impressive 124 carries for 753 yards and six touchdowns—numbers that would make him a feature back on most teams. In fact, Missouri was the only SEC squad to place two rushers in the conference's top 10 for rushing yards.

"We got a tough situation because you got Ahmad Hardy, who is a consensus All-American, but I think Jamal Roberts is as good a back as there is in the country," head coach Eli Drinkwitz said last year. "And how do you beg Jamal to take less to stay here? That's the reality of it."

That reality may now shift in Roberts' favor. With two seasons of eligibility remaining and a commitment to Missouri that dates back to 2023, the St. Louis native has remained loyal to the Tigers' program. If called upon, he brings a blend of power, vision, and patience that could keep Missouri's offense humming—even without its record-breaking star.

For fans and fantasy football enthusiasts alike, Roberts is a name to watch. In a backfield that suddenly has an opening, he's poised to prove that the Tigers' rushing attack runs deeper than one man.
