The high school boys tennis postseason is officially underway in central Ohio, and that means it's time to celebrate the standout players who dominated the regular season. The sectional tournaments kicked off May 12, kicking off a two-week journey toward the state championships. But before we crown a state champion, we want to hear from you: Who was the top regular-season player in the Columbus area?
We've narrowed it down to 10 exceptional candidates, nominated by area coaches and The Columbus Dispatch staff. These athletes have shown incredible skill, determination, and sportsmanship on the court. Whether they're seasoned veterans or rising stars, each one has made a strong case for being named the regular-season player of the year.
Here's a quick look at the contenders:
Bruey (Sophomore, Central) – Entering the postseason with an impressive 18-2 record, all at No. 1 singles, Bruey helped lead his team to a 16-4 regular season. He earned the top seed in his home Division I sectional.
Cheung (Senior, Gahanna Lincoln) – A senior seeking his second Division I state tournament berth, Cheung posted a 9-2 record at first singles and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles. He secured the top seed in singles for the Gahanna Lincoln sectional.
Hand (Senior, Upper Arlington) – A four-star recruit bound for Butler, Hand entered the sectional undefeated in singles since his sophomore year, including a 7-0 mark this spring. A two-time Division I state qualifier, he earned the top seed in singles at the Upper Arlington sectional.
Hawley (Junior, Pickerington Central) – Hawley took on one of the toughest schedules in the area, facing some of the state's top singles players and finishing 6-6. A state qualifier in doubles last year, he is the second seed in the Pickerington Central sectional.
Lessard (Freshman, Columbus Academy) – This five-star recruit has been a versatile asset, playing either first or second singles to lead a deep Lions lineup. With a 13-3 record, he is the top seed in the Division II sectional at Columbus Academy.
Lessard (Junior, Columbus Academy) – A two-time Division II state champion (once in singles, once in doubles), this junior and Northwestern commit has gone 10-2 this spring, proving he's a force to be reckoned with.
