While Azzi Fudd's name is now synonymous with elite guard play, her basketball pedigree runs deep. Her mother, Katie Smrcka‑Duffy Fudd, was a standout player in her own right, carving out a path that her daughter is now following to the professional ranks.
Katie's journey began as a high school star, recognizable on the court for her signature braids and dynamic play. Her talent earned her a collegiate career split between N.C. State and Georgetown, where she amassed an impressive 2,000 points. Her scoring prowess and guard skills were so notable that she was once ranked among the top 20 all-time athletes in the Virginia area.
That college success led to a professional opportunity when she was selected by the Washington Monarchs with the 62nd overall pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Though her WNBA tenure was brief, her connection to the game remained strong. Today, she and her husband, Tim, are deeply involved in youth basketball development, coaching the GTS Fusion team in Virginia.
There's a beautiful symmetry to their story. Katie once competed against the mighty UConn Huskies while at Georgetown. Now, she's a proud supporter of the program after watching her daughter, Azzi, become a star under Coach Geno Auriemma. As Azzi prepares to hear her name called near the top of the WNBA Draft, it represents a full-circle moment few families experience—a testament to a shared legacy of hard work, skill, and a deep love for the game.
