The Oklahoma Sooners' 2023 recruiting class was headlined by five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold, but it's a former under-the-radar defensive end who's now stealing the spotlight. When four-star edge-rusher Colton Vasek flipped his commitment to Texas in November 2022, OU's coaching staff had to act fast. Just one day later, they extended an offer to Taylor Wein, a relatively unknown prospect at the time. Within weeks, Wein committed, signing as an unheralded piece of the class.
Fast forward to today, and that decision looks like a masterstroke. Now a redshirt-junior, Wein enjoyed a breakout 2025 campaign that saw him rack up 39 total tackles, seven sacks, one interception, and a pivotal forced fumble in the win over Alabama. While Vasek managed just 10 tackles and two sacks over two seasons in Austin, Wein became a starter and a key cog in one of the nation's top defenses.
Wein's rise is a testament to both OU's defensive coaching staff—known for identifying and developing overlooked talent—and Wein's own relentless work ethic since arriving in Norman. Now, ESPN has taken notice. In their way-too-early top 25 rankings for 2026, the sports giant named Wein as Oklahoma's breakout player flying under the national radar.
"A second-team All-SEC selection last fall, Wein still might not be the first face you think of within a defensive core that returns veterans like Peyton Bowen, Jayden Jackson, and Kip Lewis," ESPN noted. "But the redshirt junior is no secret around Norman after his breakout campaign on one of the nation's top defenses."
For Sooners fans, Wein's journey from a last-minute replacement to a potential defensive centerpiece is exactly the kind of story that makes college football special. And if his trajectory continues, don't be surprised to see his name—and his jersey—become a must-have for OU supporters this season.
