The Stonycreek Rendezvous is back, and whitewater enthusiasts are counting down the days. Hosted by the Benscreek Canoe Club, this beloved three-day event returns to Greenhouse Park on state Route 403 in Tire Hill from Friday through Sunday. Now in its 36th year, it's the perfect blend of adrenaline-pumping action and community spirit, designed to welcome everyone from seasoned paddlers to curious newcomers.
"It's like one big family reunion," says Mike Cook, president of the Benscreek Canoe Club. "People look forward to it every year, and we see between 1,000 to 1,200 attendees coming through the gates." The event has grown steadily, drawing participants from as far as Canada and 16 different states, including Maryland, Ohio, and New York. It's a testament to the Stonycreek River's reputation as one of the best whitewater destinations on the East Coast, with rapids ranging from Class I for beginners to Class V for experts.
What makes this rendezvous truly special is its dual focus on recreation and conservation. "We're showcasing the top-notch outdoor resources in Johnstown," Cook explains. To keep the river flowing at optimal levels, the Quemahoning Reservoir will release water daily throughout the event, ensuring ideal conditions for boaters. It's a perfect chance to experience the thrill of whitewater while appreciating the area's natural beauty.
The action kicks off Friday at 6 p.m. with a Class II/III downriver sprint race from Carpenter's Park to Greenhouse Park. Kayakers, open boaters, and canoeists will compete in this high-energy event, which is now part of the prestigious Headwaters Cup series. "This is the crown jewel of that four-race series," Cook says proudly. "We've seen a big uptick in competitors because of it."
Saturday brings the annual freestyle rodeo at 2:30 p.m., where paddlers show off their skills with cartwheels, flips, and other tricks. Judged on difficulty, variety, and style, the competition features beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes. "Greenhouse Park was designed for this kind of boating," Cook notes. Winners take home the coveted Stonycreek Rendezvous river rock trophies—a true badge of honor in the whitewater community.
The weekend wraps up Sunday with open boating for all skill levels, giving everyone a chance to ride the rapids one last time. Whether you're chasing trophies or just soaking in the camaraderie, the Stonycreek Rendezvous is where adventure meets tradition. So grab your gear, hit the water, and be part of this unforgettable celebration of whitewater culture.
