The Chicago White Sox have made a savvy move to bolster their outfield, signing veteran Randal Grichuk to a one-year, $1.25 million deal. To make room on the roster, the team has placed outfielder Austin Hays back on the 10-day injured list due to a left calf strain. This transaction comes at a crucial time for the South Siders, who are showing signs of life after three consecutive 100-loss seasons.
Grichuk, 34, elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the New York Yankees. He brings a much-needed right-handed bat to the lineup, particularly against left-handed pitching—an area where the White Sox have struggled. Over his 13-year career, Grichuk has posted a .268 average with an .816 OPS against southpaws, including 79 home runs and 220 RBIs in 1,569 at-bats. From 2022 to 2024, he was even more effective, hitting .317 with a .940 OPS against left-handers.
"It kind of came together last second," Grichuk said before the series opener against the Los Angeles Angels. "We were talking to a few other teams and were about to get something done when they came into the mix. It's a young, exciting team that is playing good baseball, so we felt like it was a good spot."
The White Sox have endured a tough stretch, losing at least 100 games in each of the past three years, including a major league-record 121 losses in 2024. However, the team has shown remarkable resilience this season, entering Monday with a 16-18 record. A key contributor has been first baseman Munetaka Murakami, who has blasted 13 home runs and driven in 26 runs, providing a spark for the offense.
"Any time you get a chance to throw on the jersey and compete and keep playing, it's an honor," said Grichuk, a 2009 first-round pick of the Angels who is now playing for his sixth team in four years. "They've had some tough years here, but they're on the up-and-up. They've got a lot of good guys, and I'm excited to grind with them."
Hays' injury is a setback for the White Sox. He missed most of April with a right hamstring strain and returned for just three games before suffering the calf strain, which is expected to sideline him for at least two weeks. Manager Will Venable expressed optimism about the new addition. "With Hays going down, we needed a right-handed outfielder. (Grichuk) fit the roster, he was available, and we feel really lucky that we got him. He's a guy with a ton of experience who has performed really well in his league."
As the White Sox continue their rebuild, adding a proven veteran like Grichuk could provide both stability and production. For fans looking to gear up for the season, this move signals that the team is committed to competing now—and there's no better time to show your support with the latest White Sox apparel.
