The Chicago White Sox are adding some veteran pop to their lineup. On Monday, the club signed 13-year MLB veteran Randal Grichuk to a Major League contract, according to FanSided's Robert Murray.
Grichuk, 34, was recently designated for assignment by the New York Yankees and elected free agency. He had signed a minor league deal with the Yankees during spring training but struggled to find his rhythm in the Bronx. Over 16 games and 33 plate appearances, the right-handed hitter posted a .194/.212/.323 slash line with no home runs and four doubles. He also struck out 10 times while drawing just one walk.
Despite that rough patch, Grichuk brings a proven track record to Chicago. He has crushed 212 career home runs and was an above-average everyday player as recently as 2024. In 106 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks that season, he hit 12 homers, added 20 doubles, and posted an impressive 139 OPS+.
The White Sox will be Grichuk's eighth MLB team and the sixth he's played for in the last three seasons. Given his experience, Chicago likely sees him as a platoon option against left-handed starters and a reliable bat off the bench in pinch-hit situations.
However, playing time won't be automatic. The White Sox already have Austin Hays and Sam Antonacci getting regular reps in left field, so Grichuk will need to earn his at-bats. But for a team looking to add depth and veteran leadership, this low-risk move could pay dividends as the season progresses.
