The White Sox minor league affiliates split their four games on May 6, finishing 2-2 on the day. But it was the ACL White Sox who stole the headlines with their first victory of the season—and they did it in the most bizarre way possible.
Let’s start in Charlotte, where the Knights (17-18) came tantalizingly close to their fourth straight win and a spot above .500. Veteran reliever Tyler Gilbert, 32, opened the game and delivered two scoreless innings, setting the tone early. The game stayed deadlocked until the fifth inning, when Dru Baker launched his third homer of the season to put Charlotte up 2-0. LaMonte Wade Jr. added an insurance run in the sixth with his fourth home run of the year, and it looked like the Knights were cruising.
But baseball is a game of momentum swings, and the Jumbo Shrimp seized theirs in the bottom of the sixth. Reliever Lucas Sims struggled, allowing five of seven batters to reach base. Four singles and three walks later, Jacksonville had plated four runs and taken the lead.
The Knights fought back in the eighth. Braden Montgomery—who else?—started a rally with a one-out single. Jacob Gonzalez followed with a ground-rule double, and after an error tied the game, Korey Lee was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Caden Connor then delivered a two-run single, giving Charlotte a 6-4 lead. But the bullpen couldn’t hold it. Riley Gowens surrendered a two-run homer in the eighth to tie the game, and in the ninth, Heriberto Hernández took Gowens deep to seal the 7-6 loss.
Meanwhile, the Birmingham Barons (13-15) had their game against the Knoxville Smokies postponed due to inclement weather. The two teams will make it up on Friday.
In Winston-Salem, the Dash (17-12) had a day to forget. The Hudson Valley Renegades jumped all over starter Seth Keener, 24, and never looked back, cruising to an 11-1 victory in just eight innings. The Dash offense never found its footing, managing just one run against a relentless Renegades pitching staff.
But the highlight of the day came from the ACL White Sox, who notched their first win of the season in a game that defied explanation. Details were scarce, but the victory was as unconventional as it was welcome—a reminder that in the minors, you never know what you’re going to see.
For White Sox fans, the affiliate report card is mixed: the Knights showed fight but couldn’t close, the Dash got blown out, and the Barons got rained out. But the ACL squad provided a spark of excitement, proving that even in a 2-2 day, there’s always something worth watching in the farm system.
