Well, this was a surprise.

Sometimes, the most unexpected heroes emerge when you least expect them. The Chicago White Sox have been riding high on Munetaka Murakami's power surge this season—he's tied with Aaron Judge for the league lead with 13 home runs. But even with Murakami anchoring the lineup, the club has been desperate for other bats to step up beyond Colson Montgomery.

Enter Drew Romo, a backup catcher who was called up just over a week ago. Before joining the White Sox, Romo had 56 plate appearances with the Colorado Rockies across 2024 and 2025—and zero home runs to show for it. Fast forward to now, and he has three homers in just five games with Chicago.

Romo's breakout began Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels, when he crushed the first home run of his big-league career. He didn't stop there—he went deep again in his very next at-bat. Then, to prove it wasn't a fluke, he added a third homer Sunday against the San Diego Padres.

His timely power surge helped the White Sox sweep the Angels and take a series win over the Padres. That performance caught the attention of Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller, who bumped Chicago from No. 27 to No. 21 in his latest power rankings. Miller noted, "Chicago's wholly unexpected leading slugger of the week was Drew Romo. Called up just 10 days ago to take what had been Reese McGuire's roster spot as the backup catcher, Romo entered the week with zero home runs in his 61 plate appearances in the majors. Nevertheless, he homered in back-to-back ABs in Tuesday's win over the Angels and hit a third one on Sunday against the Padres."

The White Sox have a golden opportunity to build on this momentum with another series against the Angels starting Monday. Despite a rocky start to the season, this team is proving they have the depth and grit to keep opponents on their toes. If Romo can keep swinging a hot bat, Chicago might just have found the spark they needed.
