The Chicago White Sox have made a low-risk move to bolster their bullpen, acquiring veteran left-handed pitcher Trevor Richards from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for cash considerations.
Richards, 32, brings a wealth of experience to the South Side, having pitched for seven different organizations over his nine-year MLB career—including stints with the Marlins, Rays, Brewers, Blue Jays, Twins, Royals, and Diamondbacks. He made two relief appearances for the Phillies this season after being called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on April 30, posting a solid 2.08 ERA over 4⅓ innings with five strikeouts and three walks.
While his career ERA sits at 4.52, Richards offers the White Sox a seasoned arm who can eat innings and provide depth out of the bullpen—a valuable commodity as the long season wears on.
To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, Chicago transferred right-hander Drew Thorpe to the 60-day injured list. Thorpe is still recovering from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent last year, and his move to the 60-day IL ensures he won't be rushed back.
The White Sox were in Anaheim on Tuesday night for the second game of a three-game series against the Angels, where Richards could soon make his debut in a Chicago uniform.
